Geno Smith completed his first career comeback to lead the New York Jets to an 18-17 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
It would not have been possible without the brutal penalty the Bucs’ Lavonte David committed with under seven seconds remaining.
With under a minute remaining on the clock, the Jets got the ball back on their own 20 yard line. A few plays later, with the game looking over, Geno Smith made a last ditch effort to gain some yards in hope of a Hail Mary.
Instead, David came in with a late hit with Smith clearly out of bounds and allowed the Jets to take 15 yards extra on the play, setting up a clutch Nick Folk 48-yard field goal to win the game.
The Jets looked doomed as the defense gave up a last minute FG to Tampa. This came after a successful first stand for the defense, but the offense was unable to get a first down and finish off the Bucs.
Rex Ryan and Jets fans everywhere will take that one. After battles with the media for the past few months, Gang Green is off to a positive start. The stunning victory gives the Jets a 1-0 record, good for first place in the AFC East.
That undefeated record will be tested quickly, as the Jets meet up with the rival New England Patriots, on Thursday.
